Organizing local participation in a global, networked economy

The Future of Smart (TFoS) aims to accelerate and enable smart city development through social technologies including innovative business models, public-private partnerships, governance structures, organizational designs and sustainable municipal enterprises.

Cities are now competing against one another for limited funding sources to make investments in smart city technologies. And win or lose, cities will likely be unprepared when big players in the smart city space such as Alphabet, GE,  IBM, and Qualcomm offer to own and operate the infrastructure required for the smart city as platform.

TFoS is committed to envisioning and developing a third alternative–an alternative based on cooperation rather than competition and on arrangements that put people and places first.
