The Future of Smart (TFoS) was one of a number of ideas generated during the City of Oakland’s open, crowdsourced response to the US Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge Grant (www.smartoakland.net). The idea was to create a third alternative for mid-size cities like Oakland to become smart cities as platforms: not by competing against one another for limited grant funding; nor by simply turning over the keys to the city to private interests through franchise agreements; rather, by envisioning, implementing, scaling and replicating innovative business models and governance structures that empower municipalities and their constituents to own and steward the smart city as platform and benefit from rather than simply bare the costs of the IoT revolution.
